It’s Ash Wednesday, and the seasonal Catholic guilt rolls around. Today, I’m filled with immense guilt. A sense of dread brimming from my tingling toes to my aching head, it doesn’t help that there’s soreness lodged at the back of my throat and a runny nose. Mother had pinged my phone, “I’m going to the chapel later.” There was a small one at her workplace. My guilt grows, carving through my soul. I thought of going to our local church and attend too....

i keep waking up elsewhere

Lately, I have been getting strange dreams. Heart beating through my ribs, sweat drops on my forehead, and my ears ringing. I wake up praying without meaning to. Weird dreams aren’t new to me. I’ve been having them for a long time. Unfathomable, but somehow surreal. I feel it in my fingers when I touch someone or the way my knees tingle when I fall. And I fall jolting up from my warm mattress, the duvet all crumpled. I have recorded some of these daymares in writing. Drift notes: Strange...

the sky is plain white and i’m thinking about God again

I gazed upon the midwintery sky through my misty window, all fogged up with humidity, little droplets of water bundled in its corners. It was plain white, and stretched on, never-ending. It made me think about God again. Faith. However convoluted. Faith never left when I did. Even miles away, I carry my grandparents’ prayers in my spine. Angel of God, my Guardian dear… Faith reached me before I ever understood what it was asking of me. In my grandparents' house, God was not an idea but a...

cold enough to think clearly

Today was cold. So cold, that I stayed in my pyjamas until half eleven. Holding onto every little bit of my body warmth for comfort. I hung my David Bowie top, and grey joggers by the radiator, letting it simmer in the heat before I could put it on with ease. Had breakfast with my parents per usual: fluffy eggs, Spam, and the ever-so tasteful fatty strips of bacon from America. They taste different. Good. But I always have it with rice for balance. Said goodbye to Mummy, wished her well for...

between heaven and earth

The room was dark, and the candles on the makeshift altar lit dimly. Shadows overcast against the walls as retreat leaders tread warily around the room, handing out blank sheets of paper to retreatants, who knelt comfortably on the marble floors. Everyone sat still like the silence in the room, but past the glassy windows and into the dark of the night was the indistinct roar of engines along the roads. But that didn’t disturb the placidity within the enclosed four-walled room, filled with...
